Vessel Traffic Surveys & Analysis

Using the latest technology combined with real time recorded data and the experience of master mariners, Marico is able to provide a comprehensive traffic routeing service and navigation risk assessment to ports, harbours, government authorities and offshore energy developers using radar and AIS tracking capabilities.

Marico has been undertaking vessel traffic surveys and analysis since 2001 and the Marico survey team is able to tap into existing port radars, use historic track data, or establish a mobile tracking unit in a prime location in order to obtain accurate data. The client will receive a true picture of the activity, type and density of traffic at a location.

Information managed on a GIS database allows SQL queries, thematic plots and full data analysis, with in-house software providing a powerful and intellectual means of assessing present and future vessel movements. Knowing the vessel traffic trends enables risk to be reduced.

Using data from our database, a Marico traffic survey or data sets provided by the client, Marico has developed a suite powerful tools able to analyse actual vessel encounters, densities and flows.

This form of analysis far exceeds current methodology and provides a much more accurate analysis allowing collision and encounter risk to be assessed on real data in any area of vessel activity.

The encounter analysis has been used in the wind farm consents process and provides also an opportunity for coastal areas, ports and harbours.

Marico’s traffic analysis is always based on real time recorded data. Highly accurate data generated every 10 seconds (or even more frequently) from radar and/or AIS can be laid on nautical charts. Using real data allows us to look at the details of the area in question, like vessels stooging in the area waiting for pilots etc.
